The construction of the new synagogue in Potsdam is a controversial topic. It is about erecting a religious building in a historical and political metropolis. The challenges of reviving Jewish life in Germany become clear through these discussions, and in 2012 the plan was concretized and the state government made a plot of land in the city center available. Several architectural competitions were held. The synagogue was to have not only a religious, but also a cultural center. However, the first designs met with resistance. Some people criticized the modern design as unsuitable for the historic cityscape. There were also differences of opinion in the Jewish community, which led to delays. The first design was very modern, with clean lines and a glass façade. People complained that the design did not fit in with the historic center. The conservationists wanted a traditional design. Supporters saw the modern design as a sign of a forward-looking Jewish community, and political tensions exacerbated the conflict. Right-wing populist groups used the debate to stir up prejudice against Jews, which led to intense public discussions about anti-Semitism. The construction of the synagogue is also a symbolic act, as the destruction of the old synagogue left a deep wound in the city, and there were differing opinions in the Jewish community. Some members supported the project, while others recognized the need for a large and costly building and preferred simpler solutions. The discussions show the cultural and religious diversity of the community and after intensive discussions a solution was found. The current design combines modern and traditional elements and blends in better with the historic cityscape. The move is scheduled to take place in August 2024.
