The former synagogue was extensively renovated for two years and converted into a cultural center. Thanks to a joint effort by the National Fund, the province of Lower Austria and the city of St. Pölten, 4.6 million euros were invested in the renovation and extension work. The building was constructed in 1913 by the Jewish religious community, with the majority of the construction costs being financed by private donations. The synagogue was badly damaged during the November protests in 1938. In the 1980s, the St. Pölten synagogue was renovated again for the first time, at that time also by the public sector with funds from the federal government, the state of NÖ and the town of St. Pölten. This made it possible to save the dilapidated building.

„This synagogue was the religious and cultural center of the Jews in St. Pölten and the surrounding area. The National Socialists first destroyed the synagogue and then expelled and murdered the people. With its use as a cultural center and place of remembrance, the St. Pölten Synagogue has become a contemporary witness," explains Oskar Deutsch, President of the Jewish Community of Vienna, which owns the building. "May the memory of the families who prayed here last forever.
