Heerstrasse 141
10000 Berlin
Germany
Due to the East-West division of the city of Berlin, the Jewish community of Berlin was also divided into East and West. This meant for the Jews in the western part of the city: a new cemetery had to be built. In the north-western part of Grunewald, which here borders on Heerstr., an area of about 3.4 hectares was purchased in 1955 for the construction of a cemetery. This was consecrated in 1956 and until today über 5.000 burials took place here.
A memorial stone reminds of the murder of countless Jews under the rule of the National Socialists. Here also an urn with ashes from the concentration camp Auschwitz was buried.
When visiting this cemetery, the very differently designed graves stand out. If some departments very simply prepared Gräber show, so are in other places large gravestones of black marble with gilded inscriptions to find. Representation now also plays a role in Jewish cemeteries. At the beginning of the cemeteries are two historic gravestones from the 13th century from the Judenkiewer, a former Jewish cemetery in Spandau, rediscovered in 1955 during renovation work on the citadel. At known Persönlichkeiten are buried here:
An today still known Persönlichkeiten lie u.a buried in this cemetery:
- Ernst Deutsch: German actor (Ernst Deutsch Theater, Berlin)
- Heinz Galinski: 1949-1992 Chairman of the Jewish community of Berlin and honorary citizen of the city of Berlin
- Gerhard Löwenthal: television journalist and presenter
- Hans Rosenthal: radio and television presenter, quizmaster
