In Hagen Street, the two Roozendaal families ran a modest used goods business that allowed only a poor standard of living. Both husbands had died very early: Mozes in 1920 at the age of 41, Salomon in 1912, 36 years old. The wives were left behind with four and three children, respectively. They were often provided with food by well-meaning neighbors.

Bertha Roozendaal née Israel fled with her four children Erich, Johanna, Siegfried and Rosalie to Borne near Hengelo in the Netherlands. There they were caught up by the wave of German persecution - and via Westerbork all perished in Auschwitz in 1943/44, except Rosalie. Rosalie went through seven concentration camps, and was finally liberated in Bergen-Belsen. She then emigrated to San Francisco, USA, where she married the Hungarian Jew Arthur Krzesni, who died in 1992. She herself died in 2004 at the ripe old age of 90, surrounded by a large family circle including children and grandchildren.

Salomon's wife Berta née Eichenwald came from Horstmar. Her children Ernst and Jenni were murdered in Auschwitz and Sobibor respectively in 1943. The daughter Hendrina managed to escape to Gronau in Westphalia, where she married a Catholic partner and thus evaded persecution. She died in Nordhorn in 1970.
