The Förderkreis Görlitzer Synagoge e.V. was founded in 2004. The association is committed to a use of the building that respects its original purpose. Its goal is the establishment of a "Cultural Forum Görlitz Synagogue"
.The synagogue is well suited for concerts, theater performances, readings, discussions, exhibitions, symposia and conferences, but should not be used as a mere alternative venue for arbitrary events for which no other space happens to be available. Rather, the Förderkreis pleads for the establishment of a cultural forum with a distinctive content profile in the Görlitz Synagogue.
Four thematic areas are the focus:
- Judaism in history and the present .
- Tolerance and civil courage .
- Outlawed music, literature, art .
- Central Europe - Traditions and Perspectives
The Forum Goerlitz Synagogue should be a place of learning, experimentation, reflection, discussion. There must be room for unexpected encounters and trying out new cultural forms. There are currently efforts to re-establish a Jewish community in Görlitz. The Förderkreis welcomes and supports this initiative. Perhaps one day a new community will be able to make the synagogue a Jewish place of worship again. As long as this is not the case, a room next to the central hall - the former weekday synagogue - should be made available for Jewish devotions and services: for Jews who live in Görlitz or who are temporarily staying in the city. The Förderkreis seeks discussion and cooperation with all institutions and individuals in Görlitz and beyond who care about the future of the synagogue. It is recognized as a non-profit organization.
