6845 Hohenems
Austria
The Jewish Museum Hohenems commemorates the Jewish community of Hohenems and its diverse contributions to the development of Vorarlberg and the Alpine region. It tells an exemplary story of the Diaspora. And it deals with Jewish presence in Europe, with questions of coexistence and migration. In between stands the end of the Jewish community of Hohenems, marked by regional Nazi history, anti-Semitism, expulsion, and deportation.
Along these fault lines of regional and global history, it is dedicated to people, their experiences and life stories, and cultivates relationships with the descendants of Jewish families from Hohenems around the world.
The museum offers annual special exhibitions and an extensive program of events.
The permanent exhibition in the Heimann-Rosenthal villa, built in 1864, documents the history of the Hohenems Jewish community, which existed for over three centuries until its extermination during the Nazi era. And tells of the beginnings of the post-war period and of the life of the Hohenems diaspora.
Modern audio guides and video stations in German, English and French place individual experiences in the context of a European history of migration, cross-border relations and networks. A children's exhibition with stories by Monika Helfer and shadow paintings by Barbara Steinitz
