Since 1843, the West London Synagogue owned a cemetery in Islington, but towards the end of the century it was fully occupied. Therefore one acquired 1894 in Golders Green, at that time far outside convenient and before building of the subway there 1907 still little developed, an extensive area of approx. 16,5 hectares, probably too largely for the own need, because already before the opening of the own cemetery 1896 one sold scarcely half of the reason to the Spanish-Portuguese Sephardi congregation. Their cemeteries at Mile End on the east side of the city were occupied, and they established their cemetery here, which is still in use today.
Since then, an Ashkenazi Reform congregation and a Sephardic congregation share this cemetery, the former in the left half (from the entrance), the latter in the right. Together they form the Joint Burial Committee (JBC), which manages the cemetery.
Buried in the Ashkenazic section, among others, are Rabbis Leo Baeck (1873-1956), Hugo Gryn (1930-1996), and Albert Friedlander (1927-2004), as well as cellist Jacqueline du Pré (1945-1987), who had embraced the Jewish religion before her marriage to Daniel Barenboim and who died of multiple sclerosis at the age of only 42.
From Golders Green tube station, turn right (signs for the crematorium) and follow Finchley Road under the railroad overpass to the fourth road on the right (first set of traffic lights), Hoop Lane. Turning right, it goes uphill and runs between the Jewish Cemetery on the left and and the Crematorium on the right side of the road.
The cemetery is open Sun-Thurs 8:30am-3:45pm, Fri 8:30am-1:15pm.
