ELES is the gifted support organization of the Jewish community, was founded in 2009 and is one of the thirteen gifted support organizations supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. With its targeted support for gifted young students and doctoral candidates, the Studienwerk makes an important contribution to the formation of a new Jewish intellectuality in Germany and Europe. ELES stands for a tradition-conscious, pluralistic, cosmopolitan and self-confident Judaism and supports Jews of all denominations. This coming together of all religious and non-religious strands of Judaism is unique. The ELES office is located in the heart of Berlin.
„ELES continues to make a decisive contribution to fully exploiting the future potential of the Jewish community. It brings young Jewish people together, creates networks, fosters cohesion and thus, quite incidentally, has an impact far beyond the Jewish world.“ Dr. h. c. Charlotte Knobloch, patron
Since its inception, ELES has placed one of its focal points on interreligious dialogue. In recent years, innovative formats have emerged to advance this. In 2015, the program „Dialogue Perspectives. Religions and Worldviews in Conversation“ a cross-work dialogue program was initiated in 2015, which since 2019 has also invited students from selected EU countries to participate. In 2019, the Jewish-Muslim think tank Karov-Qareeb was launched, a joint initiative of ELES and the Avicenna Muslim Studies Institute.
With its program DAGESH. KunstLAB ELES, ELES also supports artists from various disciplines as well as cantors and art scholars. DAGESH serves the networking and promotion of young Jewish artists, makes Jewish art visible (without defining what Jewish art is) and reflects on the cultural-political dimensions of this art, especially in Germany and Europe.
