Residence and stumbling block of Henriette Kuhn

Two Stolpersteine were laid for members of the Rastatt families Bakofen and Kuhn, who ran a grain store on Rauentalerstraße. Henriette Bakofen was the daughter of Josef Bakofen, a native of Bohemia, who had married Elise Maier of Rastatt after his military service. In 1886, Henriette married Bernhard Kuhn, a merchant from the Palatinate, who became a partner in the grain business. After Josef Bakofen retired from the business, it was continued by Bernhard Kuhn and Emil Bakofen, Josef Bakofen's youngest son, born in 1877. Emil married Hedwig Katzenstein, a native of Eschwege. The Bakofen and Kuhn families were very present in the social life of the town. In 1905, Henriette Kuhn, together with other women, applied for permission to organize children's gymnastics in the town gymnasium at Rohrersteg. Emil Bakofen was a member of the PV Teutonia and co-founded the Volksbildungsverein in 1911.

After both men died in the 1930s, the two widows, Henriette Kuhn and Hedwig Bakofen, continued to run the company. Due to the National Socialist boycott measures and economic burdens, they had to sell the company and the warehouse building in Rauentalerstraße below value in 1939. The building thus came into the possession of the Nazi Air Corps. Both women therefore had to leave Rastatt and found accommodation with relatives in Mannheim and Berlin. Henriette Kuhn was deported from Mannheim to Gurs in 1940 and died in Rivesaltes in 1941. Hedwig Bakofen was deported from Berlin to Ausschwitz in 1943 and murdered there. Stolpersteine are laid in their memory at the last Rastatt residences of the two women at Bahnhofstraße 7 and Karlstraße 4.
