Schloßstraße 2
76437 Rastatt
Germany
The house of the castle street 2 belonged since 1873 to the synagogue executive Josef Altschul. Here Altschul operated the inn "Wilder Mann".
In the Schlossstraße 2 lived, after the Altschul family moved away from Rastatt, from 1912 also the Wertheimer families and later also the Stern couple. Isaak Wertheimer was born in Muggensturm in 1869 and was a merchant by profession. From 1901 he lived in Rastatt and ran a livestock business. His first marriage to his wife Jenny produced two sons, Julius (*1910) and Myrtil (*1911). After Jenny Wertheimer died in 1923, Isaak Wertheimer married Elsa Stern, born in Gernsbach in 1889, a year later. Julius Wertheimer emigrated to Paris in 1933, where he was able to continue his studies. He changed his name from Julius to Jules. His brother Myrtil emigrated to Palestine in 1934 and lived in Haifa. Isaak Wertheimer and his wife Elsa also emigrated to Paris in 1937. Jules Wertheimer visited his hometown Rastatt several times after the war and contributed decisively to the reconciliation. Myrtil Wertheime moved back to Germany, where he also died.
In addition to the Wertheimer family, the couple Walter Stern (*1900) and Meta Stern née Damidt (*1907) also lived in the house. They emigrated to Cyprus in 1939.
Today, six Stolpersteine commemorate the former Jewish residents.
