In 1615, a Jewish cemetery was mentioned for the first time. This first burial ground was located on the Judenwall in front of the Steintor. It probably extended over house plots no. 1-9 on today's Dr. Josef-Koch-Straße (Josef-Straße until 1948).
In the second half of the 18th century, there were repeated disputes between the Jewish community and the city over the fees to be paid and the boundaries of the cemetery. A new burial ground was laid out around 1830; the old one was probably built over in the course of time. The new cemetery was used until 1938. It was dismantled in 1941. The boundary wall was torn down and the gravestones were used to reinforce the Emswehr. However, three stones were found in the cellar of the party house in 1945, one was moved to the Jewish cemetery Einsteinstraße in Münster at the request of the descendants, the other two were re-erected as part of the redesign in 2005.
