Panofsky, Hugo

Dr. phil. Hugo Panofsky was born on July 10, 1860 in Gliwice (Upper Silesia) as the youngest of 10 children of the merchant Moritz Panofsky and his wife Johanna, née Schlesinger. He had worked as a professor at the Leibnitz Gymnasium in Berlin and was not married. As late as February 1942, he was still taking care of the graves of his mother and five of his siblings, as can be seen from a corresponding invoice. 
On August 20, 1942, at the age of 82, he was deported from Berlin on the so-called "46th old-age transport" to Theresienstadt, where he perished on December 18 of the same year.
