Rat-Beil-Straße 10
60318 Frankfurt am Main
Germany
The Jewish cemetery at Rat-Beil-Strasse 10 forms the southern end of the main cemetery and has been used since the closure of the old Jewish burial ground Battonnstrasse from 1828 - 1928. On the 74,000 square meter large area there are approximately 30,000 - 40,000 graves.
The classicist gate building of the city architect Friedrich Rumpf consists of a Doric column portal, in which a wrought-iron gate is let in as well as lateral wall terminations with Pilastergliederung. The architrave shows the Hebrew inscription: "May peace come. They will rest on their couches and walk in His presence". This entrance is no longer in use today, instead there is an entrance a few meters to the right. Many famous personalities from art and culture, science as well as finance are buried there, including members of the Rothschild family.
Worth seeing are the magnificent, sometimes pompously picturesque tombs built by wealthy liberal Jews. For the members of the Israelite Religious Society, which split off from the congregation, a part of the cemetery grounds was separated and walled off in 1886. There, according to Orthodox custom, are gravestones with exclusively Hebrew inscriptions. The cemetery is freely accessible, except on Saturdays and Jewish holidays. Male visitors are expected to wear a head covering (e.g. a kippah).
