Fragen
Frage
What Is Jewish Places?
Antwort

The Jewish Places project is the very first website to visualize both historical and contemporary Jewish sites on the same interactive map. Users can search and filter it for structured content, but also contribute their own entries or edit existing information. This “user-generated content” approach and the support from Creative Commons will help future researchers and interested parties independently document their knowledge about Jewish regional history online and link it to supplementary information and media. The community reviews the contributed content’s quality and corrects it if necessary. In addition, Jewish Places provides professionally written content such as life stories, walks, and thematic features as well as free-of-charge workshop materials.

Frage
How do we define a “Jewish place”?
Antwort

*** A “Jewish place” is a physical location where Jews have voluntarily lived and worked in the past or the present. A Jewish place is also a physical place with a focus on Jewish life and Jewish culture.

This means, by extension, that memorials or places of compulsion by the Nazis and other oppressive groups are not considered Jewish places. Furthermore, we do not count occurrences without a fixed location, such as events, exhibitions, concerts, etc., related to Jewish life as “Jewish places.”***

If you are unsure whether the place you would like to add counts as a “Jewish place” under the above definition, do not hesitate to write to us at any time: jewish-places@jmberlin.de.

The editorial team reserves the right to remove entries from the website that do not meet our definition.

Frage
Who has been involved in the project?
Antwort

The Jewish Places project is assisted and supported by numerous cooperative partners and third-party sponsors. These partners’ involvement includes content, conceptual development, and consulting. In some cases they supplement the website with their own specific online offerings or media. You can find a list of the cooperative partners and third-party sponsors who support and assist Jewish Places on the About Us page.

Frage
What about Gender-Neutral Language?
Antwort

Overall, we strive for a nonviolent and inclusive use of words. For example, texts written by our network use gender-neutral language. We also use quotation marks to distance ourselves from outdated or Nazi labels for victim groups, such as Sinti and Roma, and use such terms minimally and exclusively in historical contexts.
