Betty Blumenthal came into the world on February 11, 1870 in Treptow an der Rega/West Pomerania in a Jewish family. She became a dressmaker and married the non-Jewish Robert Lenz; a child was born to them who was not brought up in the Jewish faith. Her husband died as early as 1899. In the early 1940s, Betty Lenz lived for a few months as a subtenant at 39 Belziger Strasse in the two-room apartment of the musician Richard London.
