Sigismund Basch was born into a Jewish family in Wollstein/Posen on June 13, 1883. He became a manufacturer of agricultural machinery in Posen and married Herta Berlowitz in 1914. Their children were born: Hildegard on November 10, 1915 and Heinz Hermann on April 25, 1920. The family then moved to Berlin and lived at Lutherstraße 51 (today Keithstraße 14) in a 6-room apartment. Sigismund Basch lost his employment due to the insolvency of his employer, and his father-in-law Felix Berlowitz supported the family financially.
