The municipality of Lautertal was created on December 31, 1971, as part of the territorial reform in Hesse by the voluntary merger of four previously independent municipalities: Elmshausen (without the district of Wilmshausen), Gadernheim (with Raidelbach, but without the district of Kolmbach), Lautern and Reichenbach, into which the municipality of Beedenkirchen (with Staffel) was incorporated on the same day.
