Salomon Ludwig Steinheim-Institute for German-Jewish History

The Steinheim Institute conducts research on the history and culture of Jews in German-speaking countries. German-Jewish history spans from the Middle Ages to the present. The tightly interwoven net of relationships between Jewish and majority communities and their history is examined in terms of religious, sociohistorical, literary, and cultural aspects. Sources, traditions, and contexts within and between different Jewish communities are increasingly at the center of our research and outreach interests. These offer new insights into the ways Jews in the German-speaking countries and in Europe in general have been able to assertively and often interactively shape their lifeworlds.
