In 1926, the Hachshara site was established in Hamelin by the umbrella organization of Zionist youth organizations ‚Hechaluz‘ (Pioneer). The members of the Zionist youth organization were active in the villages around Hamelin on various changing farms. They did not have a central contact point. They met in small groups on alternate Sundays and on the second Sunday for the general pegisha, the formal meeting at which they were prepared for emigration to Palestine. There were problems with restaurants, as the Chawerim (comrades/fellows) did not eat anything and did not drink alcohol. It was only when the Oberweser/Riepenburg youth castle above Aerzen became available in 1928 that there was a suitable meeting place.
The dentist Hermann Grandauer from Hamelin was a major supporter of the Hachshara.
