Public History

With Germany’s second professorial chair in Public History, the University of Cologne launched a new Public History track within the history Master’s degree program in the winter semester of 2015–16. The two-year consecutive Master’s program combines research and teaching to a rigorous academic standard and is aimed at analyzing and reflecting upon the public treatment of history. The Public History track is also application oriented.

It accounts for the “history boom” of recent decades in two ways. First, contemporary historical culture becomes an area of research. Second, the degree program, thanks to its practical approach, qualifies graduates to disseminate specialized scholarly findings in broader public contexts.

During the summer semester of 2021, Public History students at the University of Cologne and the Freie Universität Berlin jointly researched Jewish locations in Berlin and Cologne to compile new entries for the Jewish Places map. The cooperative seminar took place under the supervision of Jens Alvermann (UzK) and Prof. Martin Lücke (FU Berlin) in cooperation with MiQua. LVR-Jewish Museum in the Archaeological Quarter Cologne and the Jewish Museum Berlin.
