Programs in Public History and Didactics of History
In the winter semester of 2008–09, the Freie Universität Berlin introduced the Master’s degree program in Public History — the first of its kind in German-speaking Europe.
Students investigate the presentation of history in public spaces, the media, and museums from a historical perspective. The Master’s program interweaves theory and practical applications. Controversies surrounding memorial cultures, and critical approaches to youth and adult education or historiographical theory are explored while working together with museums and other practitioners of public history. The digital presentation of historical topics as well as accessibility and inclusion are further key elements of the program.
In 2019, students worked together with Jewish Places to create walks and research biographies, later preparing them for the community-based website. The results were presented in June 2019 in Berlin’s Dahlem neighborhood during the Long Night of the Sciences.
In the summer semester of 2021, students in the degree program took part in a seminar in cooperation with the University of Cologne, coordinated by Jewish Places and MiQua. Students from both universities worked together researching Jewish places in Berlin and Cologne and compiling entries for the Jewish Places map.
