In 1950, the Central Council of Jews in Germany was founded to represent the interests of its 23 state associations and over 100 centralized Jewish Communities (Gemeinden), most of which unite multiple synagogues. Together, these local communities have around one hundred thousand members. The Central Council is the point of contact on the federal and state level for all public policy that affects the Jewish Communities.

For Jewish Community members and other Jews living in Germany, the Central Council of Jews in Germany provides a wide variety of offerings in the areas of education, religion, youth and young adults, and culture.

The Central Council of Jews in Germany provides a voice for all Jews living in Germany, while also acting as a strong civil society partner.

The council also takhttps://zwst.org/en/about-uses on an advisory role in the areas of science, culture, and education, and supports the work of its state associations, local Jewish Communities, and of the Central Welfare Board of Jews in Germany (ZWST).

In addition, the Central Council acts as the managing organization for the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien and the Central Archives for Research on the History of Jews in Germany in Heidelberg. Furthermore, the council is the publisher of the Jüdische Allgemeine, the only national Jewish weekly newspaper in Germany.
