In 1854, Rabbi Abraham Geiger founded the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau in this building. Jonas Fraenkel, a banker and business councillor from Breslau, had donated his estate to the foundation in his will; hence the name Fraenkel'sche Stiftung (Fraenkel Foundation).
