The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte (Museum of Bavarian History) presents Bavaria's history and culture. As the official institution of the Free State of Bavaria for modern history education, the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte (HdBG) designs exhibitions and publications on Bavarian history. The HdBG actively records contemporary events, conducts interviews with contemporary witnesses and collects memorabilia that tell stories for the museum. According to its statutes and its own mission statement, the goal of the Museum of Bavarian History is to interest the people of Bavaria, especially young people, in Bavarian history and to create awareness of Bavarian culture. Therefore, we present scientific findings in a vivid and generally understandable way.

In 2021, on the occasion of the commemorative year "1700 years of Jewish life in Germany", the HdBG has started the development of a digital platform on the history of Jewish places in Bavaria.

Body

The project bundles the already existing research of the HdBG on the Jewish cemeteries and the monuments and memorial plaques for Jewish soldiers of the First World War. In addition, the former and still existing Jewish communities and synagogues in Bavaria are now presented with texts and pictures. Examples from the extensive contemporary witness project of the HdBG and further media offers, complete the offer.

The result is an atlas of the history of the Jews in Bavaria, which contains short biographies of the more than 350 Jewish communities in Bavaria. In addition, more than 150 Jewish cemeteries and memorials in Bavaria are documented and the locations of about 350 former synagogue buildings are listed. The Internet project on the history of Jewish life in Bavaria will be filled with more and more content over time. The linking of information from the fields of monument preservation, museums, archives and libraries makes the history and present of Jewish life in Bavaria visible again.

Body

The cooperation with Jewish Places offers the possibility to link our knowledge databases beyond Bavaria, to bundle knowledge and to address new target groups. In the first phase, the short biographies of the Jewish cemeteries in Bavaria will be integrated. Each cemetery is presented with a short text and a picture.
